Re ̄ection of equatorial Kelvin waves at eastern ocean boundaries Part I: hypothetical boundaries

چکیده
A baroclinic shallow-water model is developed to investigate the eect of the orientation of the eastern ocean boundary on the behavior of equatorial Kelvin waves. The model is formulated in a spherical polar coordinate system and includes dissipation and nonlinear terms, eects which have not been previously included in analytical approaches to the problem. Both equatorial and middle latitude response are considered given the large latitudinal extent used in the model. Baroclinic equatorial Kelvin waves of intraseasonal, seasonal and annual periods are introduced into the domain as pulses of ®nite width. Their subsequent re ̄ection, transmission and dissipation are investigated. It is found that dissipation is very important for the transmission of wave energy along the boundary and for re ̄ections from the boundary. The dissipation was found to be dependent not only on the presence of the coastal Kelvin waves in the domain, but also on the period of these coastal waves. In particular the dissipation increases with wave period. It is also shown that the equatorial b-plane approximation can allow an anomalous generation of Rossby waves at higher latitudes. Nonlinearities generally have a small eect on the solutions, within the con®nes of this model.

متن کاملReflection of low-frequency equatorial waves at arbitrary western boundaries
Procedures are developed for calculating effects of western boundaries of arbitrary geometry on low-frequency equatorial waves. We show that the mass flux incident at the coast is all returned eastward by equatorial Kelvin waves. Short Rossby waves generated as part of the reflection serve only to redistribute mass along the coast. For the case of a uniformly sloping coast we present formulae a...

A nonlinear, 41⁄2-layer reduced-gravity ocean model with active thermodynamics and mixed layer physics is used to investigate the causes of sea level interannual variability in the Bay of Bengal, which may contribute to flooding and cholera outbreaks in Bangladesh. Forcing by NCEP–NCAR reanalysis fields from 1958 to 1998 yields realistic solutions in the Indian Ocean basin north of 298S. Contro...

[1] A numerical hindcast of the Pacific Ocean circulation for the period of 1988–1998 is conducted to study the dynamics of interannual variations in the 1990s. The Poseidon quasi-isopycnal ocean model is forced with an SSMI-derived wind stress product and sea surface heat flux from an atmospheric mixed layer model. On the basis of a good comparison of the hindcast results with TAO mooring obse...
متن کاملRossby Wave–Coastal Kelvin Wave Interaction in the Extratropics. Part I: Low-Frequency Adjustment in a Closed Basin
The interaction of open and coastal oceans in a midlatitude ocean basin is investigated in light of Rossby and coastal Kelvin waves. The basinwide pressure adjustment to an initial Rossby wave packet is studied both analytically and numerically, with the focus on the low-frequency modulation of the resulting coastal Kelvin wave. It is shown that the incoming mass is redistributed by coastal Kel...
